Really VT?!

Now, I'm sure that right about now you're all tired of hearing about Hurricane Sandy. It has been the topic of conversation among what seems like everyone for quite some time now. BUT I just need to go on a little rant for a minute....

So, last night around 9:00 pm everyone enrolled at Virginia Tech received a text message that read:
"S VT Alerts. In accordance with VA. Gov. executive order, Virginia Tech is closed on Monday, October 29. Classes Canceled. Essential Personal Report."
Well, as I'm sure you can imagine, my dorm erupted with cheers and excitement. Everyone started planning things to do for the night (that didn't include the homework we had all procrastinated on). I don't think I've seen a larger or happier group of people in quite some time.

But, as the story always goes, the happiness didn't last. Shortly after we all got another text message. Only this time it read:
"S VT Alerts. Virginia Tech will be OPEN on Monday, October 29. Classes and offices operate per normal schedule."
Really Virginia Tech?....REALLY?!

The sight down the hall was quite different after that message. Now, all you could see were angry college students ranting about how unfair it was, and how they couldn't do that. No Take-backs. What ever happened to that?

You want to know the reasoning behind uncancelling classes? Well, apparently the governor's order didn't apply to colleges and universities. So, VT thinks it's a good idea to have us walking across the drill field in 45-60 mile an hour winds and snow. GREAT! Good to know our safety is important to you VT!

But anyway, the study lounges quickly filled up with my hall mates.  We sat together, angrily typing away on our computers in an attempt to finish the homework we had hoped to put off one more day.

Thank you VT. Thank you for crushing the hopes and dreams of 30,000 college students last night. It's gonna take something huge to get back on our good sides again, that's all I'm saying.

Being Sick At College

Being sick at college = no fun!

I'm just getting over a cold that seemed like it wanted to last FOREVER.
Being sick at home sucks, but being sick at college is like a whole new level of sucking. You can't just get your parents to write you a note so you can skip school that day, you still have to go. You can't lay in bed all day, no one is going to bring you food.

When I first started feeling bad, I figured I could take some DayQuil and be better in no time. I'm a college kid now, I didn't need anyone to take care of me. But, after about a week, I was feeling quite differently.

There was one day when all I wanted was Chicken Noodle Soup. So, I got up and went to the dining to get some. Only when I got there, they told me they were out of it for the day. Upset, I walked to another dining hall only to be told the same exact thing. I had one more place left. One last sliver of hope. But, when I got to the last dining hall, I'm told they don't have chicken noodle soup either! Now, I don't know if you've ever been sick and really wanted some comfort food to make you feel better but not gotten it, so let me tell you it's the worst feeling in the world. I felt defeated, so I just went back to my dorm and went to sleep.

That incident just made being sick at college ten time worse. I woke up the next day wanting nothing more than to go to my mommy's house. If I were there I knew she would make me some chicken noodle soup, and maybe a grilled cheese sandwich too. She'd give me a comfy pillow and blanket and set me up a nice bed on the couch. She pop in a movie from my childhood and give me medicine to make me feel better. If she was really feeling like it she'd probably even sit there and rub my forehead or ankles. You know, everything you want when it's cold outside and you're sick.

I couldn't have any of that though. All I could do was sleep.

Moral of the story being I am NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER getting sick at college again. I have to save that for the next time I'm home.

#PinkTakesTech

I know it has been an incredibly long time since I have updated this blog...I guess I really am being a miser of memories! Well, I love absolutely everything about college. I have made so many incredible memories already that it would take me forever to try to fill you in on all of them.

BUT one particular event has stood out above the rest: the Victoria Secret Pink Takes Tech concert. This was the first concert I have ever been to, and I had so much fun! It was crazy to look out at the crowd behind me and see a sea full of 30,000 Hokies.

Home Sweet Home

Well, I've been at Virginia Tech for about four days now...and I LOVE IT!! Classes haven't even started yet, but I'm having a blast.

When I first got here I was a little weary. I didn't know anyone (except my sister) and I was really far from home and all of my friends. But, the past few days have already started to help bring me out of my shell. Once I stopped being shy and decided to just walk down my hall and talk to any random person who had their door open, I already started to make some friends!

I can already tell this is going to be a great year and I can't wait for my classes to start and to meet even more people. I'm super excited for college...I have a feeling I'm going to get Blacksburg-sick when I go home for breaks.

Well, gotta run! People to see and places to go :) Keep a look out for what cool stuff I might be up to next!

Four.

Four Days. That's all the time I have left in Queen Anne's County, MD. Four days to pack up my entire life. Four days to say goodbye to all of the people who have impacted my life, both good and bad, for the past 18 years. Four days to "grow-up". Four days until I will be calling Blacksburg,VA my new home. Four days until I start to make my mark on the Virginia Tech campus.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am incredibly excited. I'm about to make the biggest transition to date, and start an entirely new chapter in my life. But, as I'm sitting here trying to come up with something witty, funny, and interesting to write about for my first blog post, all that seems to be running through my mind are all of the memories I've managed to collect over the past four years, some great and some not so great. High school was an eye opening and life-changing experience, so I can't even begin to imagine what college will be like.
All I can do now, is reflect on the memories I've made, and look forward to the ones I am going to make as I transition into adult-hood.

So, I guess I'm leaving my first, not so witty, funny, or interesting blog post on that note because if the next four days are going to be anything like the past four years they'll be gone before I have time to blink my eyes, leaving me with no time to waste. This girl has some packing to do!
